Blood Test Results by Age: Which Numbers Actually Change

QUICK ANSWER
Most UK blood test reference ranges are the same at 25 and at 75. Only a handful of markers genuinely drift with age: testosterone, TSH, eGFR, cholesterol and HbA1c. Everything else, including vitamin D, B12 and liver markers, uses one adult range. Where age matters, your lab has usually applied it already.

The honest answer is shorter than the charts suggest. For most markers there is no age band, because the marker does not move much across adult life. For a small group, age changes everything. This guide sorts one list from the other.
1. Do blood test ranges change with age?
Mostly, no. UK labs use one adult reference range from about 18 upwards. A 24-year-old and a 74-year-old are measured against the same numbers for vitamin D, B12, liver markers and most of the rest.
Where age really does matter, the lab tends to build it in before you ever see the report. Pathology departments apply age-adjusted ranges automatically.

So the chart you are hunting for often does not exist, and often does not need to. What is worth knowing is the short list of markers that drift anyway, quietly, inside a range that never moves. Our UK reference ranges table sets out the published figures those drifts sit inside.
2. Which markers actually drift with age?
Five, in practice. Each one has its own guide, linked below, because each drifts for a different reason.

Testosterone. The famous 1%-a-year decline is a population average, not a rule. Research summarised in this review of male ageing and testosterone found the fall is far smaller in men who stay healthy and lean. Our testosterone levels by age guide has the decade-by-decade figures.
TSH. The 97.5th centile for thyroid stimulating hormone climbs steadily with age, as set out in research on interpreting a raised TSH in older adults. Free T4 and free T3 stay steadier. See normal thyroid levels for the age table.
eGFR. The Gutenberg Health Study of 12,381 adults found a median loss near 1 mL/min a year. Median eGFR ran around 110 at 35 and around 80 to 85 at 75. Our eGFR by age guide explains why the threshold still does not move.
Cholesterol. Health Survey for England data shows total cholesterol rising through midlife. In women the step up around menopause is the sharpest change of all. See cholesterol levels by age.

3. Which markers stay the same at every age?
Most of them. These use one adult target, whatever decade you are in:
- Vitamin D. The NHS advice on a daily 10 microgram supplement in autumn and winter applies to all adults.
- Vitamin B12 and folate. Same range at 30 and 70. What rises with age is the chance of poor absorption.
- Liver markers. ALT, ALP and albumin use one adult range.
- Free T4 and free T3. Steady across adult life, unlike TSH.
- CRP and magnesium. No adult age banding.

4. Why “normal for my age” can mislead you
An age average is not a health target. It describes what is common in a population, and that population includes plenty of people who are not well. Cholesterol is the clearest case. It rises with age partly because waistlines do.
So “normal for 58” can quietly mean “as unhealthy as the average 58-year-old”. That is a low bar to clear.
The trap runs the other way too. Judging an 80-year-old's TSH by a 30-year-old's target risks treating ordinary ageing as a problem. Both errors come from reading one number without context.
5. What should you do with an age-drifting result?
Track the direction, not the decade. Your own trend is the most useful thing a blood test gives you, and age never explains a fast change.
- Compare each result to your own last one, not to a chart.
- Repeat before you conclude anything from a single reading.
- Read the marker alongside your symptoms, not on its own.
- Test at a consistent time of day where timing matters.

Do blood test reference ranges change with age in the UK?
For most markers, no. UK labs use one adult range from about 18 upwards. Where an age adjustment applies, such as some haematology values, the lab quotes the age-adjusted range on your report automatically. Testosterone, TSH, eGFR, cholesterol and HbA1c drift with age even though their thresholds stay fixed.
Is there a blood test results chart by age?
Not an official UK one. Age charts you find online are usually population averages rather than reference ranges. They are useful context for a borderline result, but they are not targets, and a qualified clinician should read your number alongside your history.
Which blood test results get worse with age?
On average, eGFR falls by about 1 mL/min a year, cholesterol rises through midlife, HbA1c drifts up slowly and testosterone declines in men. TSH tends to rise too. How much any of them move varies hugely between individuals.
Does vitamin D or B12 have a different range for older adults?
No. Both use the same adult reference range at every age. What changes with age is risk rather than the range. Absorption of B12 can fall, and less time outdoors can lower vitamin D, so deficiency becomes more common without the target moving.
My result is normal for my age. Is that good enough?
Not always. An age average describes what is common, and the group it is drawn from includes people who are unwell. Cholesterol is the clearest example. Your own trend across repeat tests is a far better guide than any age band.
How often should I test as I get older?
There is no single rule. Because age-related drift is slow, a yearly baseline is usually enough to see direction. Test more often if you are changing something deliberately, such as diet, training or a supplement, or if a previous result was borderline.
