Vitamin D Levels by Age: Why the Month Matters More Than the Year

Those charts are misleading. Age is the wrong axis for this marker. This guide gives you the axis that actually matters, along with the real UK figures by age group.
1. Is there a vitamin D range by age?
No. One set of thresholds covers every adult age. A 24-year-old and a 74-year-old are measured against the same lines.
The test measures 25-hydroxyvitamin D, written as 25(OH)D. That is the storage form your body carries between sunshine and supplements. UK labs sort the result into three bands.

2. Which UK age group has the lowest vitamin D?
Not the one you would guess. The National Diet and Nutrition Survey for 2019 to 2023 measured 25(OH)D across the UK population. Deficiency was more common in working-age adults than in pensioners.

Read that again. Teenagers came out worst, and the over-65s came out best. If age drove vitamin D on its own, the column would climb steadily. It does not.
3. Why does the month beat the age?
Because between October and March, UK sunlight is too weak for your skin to make vitamin D. You live off what you stored in summer, plus whatever you eat or supplement. The same survey shows how large that swing is.

That is the whole argument in one sentence. Season moves the deficiency rate from near zero to nearly four in ten. No age band in the previous table comes close to that spread.
So the useful question is not what is normal at 52. It is what is normal in February. A result of 38 nmol/L in August is a different story from 38 nmol/L in February, even in the same person.
4. What does age genuinely change?
Your skin, not your threshold. Ageing skin holds less of the precursor that sunlight converts. A classic study in the Journal of Clinical Investigation compared skin samples across the age range. It found that ageing can cut the skin’s capacity to make vitamin D by more than half.
That sits oddly beside the NDNS table, where over-65s did best. The likely reason is behaviour. Older adults in the UK are far more likely to take a daily supplement, and supplements do not care how old your skin is.
NHS advice is age-aware in exactly that way. It sets one amount for everyone and then names the groups who need it all year.
- Adults and children over 1 need 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day.
- Everyone should consider a daily supplement through autumn and winter.
- People who are not often outdoors, including anyone frail or housebound, should take it all year round.
- People living in a care home should also take it all year round.
Those rules come from the NHS vitamin D page. Notice that none of them is a different blood threshold. They are different intake advice for the same target.
5. How do you read a borderline result?
Start with three facts about the sample, not your age. When did you test? Were you taking a supplement, and had you taken it that day? A recent high dose lifts the reading.
Then read it against the season. A late-summer result is your annual peak. If August leaves you in the insufficient band, February will almost certainly be lower.
Symptoms deserve a wider look too. Tiredness, aching muscles and low mood have many causes, and low vitamin D is only one of them. Iron, B12, folate and thyroid all produce a similar flatness, and a full blood count shows whether your red cells hold a clue.

6. Which blood test measures your vitamin D?

Teenagers. The National Diet and Nutrition Survey for 2019 to 2023 found 23% of 11 to 18-year-olds below 25 nmol/L, against 18% of adults aged 19 to 64 and 12% of over-65s.
When is the best time of year to test vitamin D?
Late winter shows your annual low, and late summer shows your peak. Testing in January to March tells you the most, because that is when UK deficiency rates run between 21% and 38%.
Should I stop my supplement before testing?
Leave that day’s dose until after your sample. If you want to know what your own body holds, tell your clinician what you take and how long you have taken it. Never stop a prescribed dose over a blood result.
