QUICK ANSWER
No. A 2021 meta-analysis of 41 clinical studies, covering 1,753 men, found that neither soy protein nor isoflavones changed total testosterone, free testosterone or oestrogen. The British Dietetic Association says the same. Soya isoflavones are weak plant compounds, not hormones, and normal portions do not move your level.
It is one of the stickiest ideas in men’s health. Soya is full of plant oestrogens, so tofu and soya milk must be quietly draining your testosterone. Skip the edamame, keep the beef.
The trials have been done. There are a lot of them, and they point one way. Here is what they found, where the myth started, and what to check if you think your testosterone really is low.

As of August 2026. Reflects the Reed et al. 2021 meta-analysis in Reproductive Toxicology and current British Dietetic Association guidance on soya foods.
1. The short answer: 41 studies, no effect
Researchers have run this experiment many times. In 2021 a team pooled every usable clinical study and re-analysed them together. The result was published in Reproductive Toxicology.
It covered 41 studies. Total testosterone was measured in 1,753 men and free testosterone in 752. SHBG, the protein that carries testosterone around your blood, was measured in 967.
The finding was flat. In the authors’ words, “neither soy protein nor isoflavone exposure affects” total testosterone, free testosterone or oestrogen levels in men. Dose made no difference. Neither did how long men ate it for.
That is a large body of evidence pointing at nothing. It is about as settled as nutrition questions get.
2. Why the worry sounds convincing
The fear has a real starting point. Soya contains isoflavones, a type of phytoestrogen. Phytoestrogens are plant compounds shaped a little like oestrogen, so they can attach to the same receptors.
Shaped like it is not the same as acting like it. Their oestrogenic activity is far weaker than the oestrogen your own body makes, and it behaves differently once it gets there.
“Studies consistently show that eating soya foods does not affect levels of any hormones in men.”
— British Dietetic Association, Soya foods and your health
The same fact sheet adds that adverse effects on fertility or sexual health have not been reported either.
Then there is the story everyone repeats. A 2008 case report described a 60-year-old man with breast tenderness and enlargement. He was drinking three quarts of soy milk a day, close to three litres. His symptoms settled after he stopped.
That is one man at roughly a dozen times a normal intake. It is a useful outer limit. It is not a reason to skip the tofu.
3. What actually lowers testosterone
If your level really is low, soya is not the culprit. The things with evidence behind them are duller, and most of them are on this list.
SHORT SLEEP
Most of your testosterone is made while you sleep. A week of five-hour nights is enough to show up in a blood sample. See sleep and testosterone.
WEIGHT AROUND THE MIDDLE
Abdominal fat is the single most consistent association in the research. Our guide to belly fat and testosterone covers why.
ALCOHOL
Heavy or sustained drinking matters far more than any food choice. Read the detail.
AGE, ILLNESS AND MEDICATION
Levels drift down slowly with age. See testosterone levels by age for what a normal range looks like at yours.
None of that is answerable from a diet diary. The only way to know where you stand is to measure it. Our Complete Male Hormones panel (£119) covers total testosterone, free testosterone, SHBG, LH, FSH, prolactin and DHEA-S from a home finger-prick sample.
One honest note on scope. Our panels do not include oestradiol, so they cannot answer an oestrogen question directly. What they can show is your testosterone, how much of it is free, and the pituitary signals behind it. Our guide to a testosterone blood test explains how those markers read together.
If you switched to soya milk with your heart in mind rather than your hormones, that is a different question with different markers. Our guide to a cholesterol blood test covers those.
4. The one real reason to think about soya
There is a genuine caution, and it has nothing to do with testosterone. The British Dietetic Association notes that soya may interfere with the absorption of thyroid medication, while adding that there are no harmful effects on normal thyroid function.
So if you take levothyroxine, the timing of soya foods is worth raising with your doctor or dietitian. It is a spacing question, not a ban. Our guide to levothyroxine blood tests covers what gets monitored.
TSH and Free T4 sit in our General Energy & Wellness panel (£149). The Thyroid & Vital Organs panel (£159) adds Free T3.
A blood test measures these markers. It does not diagnose anything, and a result that worries you belongs with your GP. If you want a wider view of the topic, start at the men’s hormones hub.
Frequently asked questions
Does soy milk lower testosterone?
No. The pooled trial data found no effect on testosterone at any dose tested. The one case report often quoted involved close to three litres of soy milk a day, which is far beyond a normal intake.
How much soya is too much for a man?
Ordinary portions of tofu, edamame, tempeh or soya milk sit well inside what the trials tested. The 2021 meta-analysis found no effect even in the higher-intake studies it pooled.
Does soy protein powder affect testosterone?
The meta-analysis looked at soy protein specifically as well as isolated isoflavones. Neither changed testosterone, free testosterone or SHBG.
Can soya cause gynaecomastia?
Only one such case has been described, at an extreme intake. If you have breast tissue changes, see a GP rather than changing your diet. Our guide to a gynaecomastia blood test covers the markers usually looked at.
Which blood test tells me my testosterone?
Our Complete Male Hormones panel measures total testosterone, free testosterone, SHBG, LH, FSH, prolactin and DHEA-S. Take the sample in the morning, when levels are highest.
Measure it instead of debating it
Our Complete Male Hormones panel (£119) measures total testosterone, free testosterone, SHBG, LH, FSH, prolactin and DHEA-S. Home finger-prick kit, results in about 5 working days, from UKAS-accredited UK laboratories.
