The pitch sounds neat: a calmer, heart-friendly magnesium that also helps you sleep. So does it beat plain old glycinate? Here is the honest comparison.
1. The short answer
If you want one form for sleep, pick glycinate. Magnesium bound to glycine absorbs well, rarely upsets the stomach, and it is the form most calm-and-sleep research has used. It is the safe default.
Taurate is not a bad choice. Magnesium bound to taurine is gentle too, and taurine has its own interest for heart and nervous-system health. But the specific claim that taurate is better for sleep runs ahead of the human evidence. If your main goal is rest, there is no proof it beats glycinate, and it usually costs more.
2. How the two forms differ
Both are “chelated” forms, meaning the magnesium is bound to an amino acid. That binding is what makes them easy to absorb and kind to the gut, unlike cheap magnesium oxide. The difference is the partner molecule.

Useful, but the authors flagged the studies as low quality, so treat it as promising rather than proven.
On the forms themselves: glycinate is the one clinicians reach for when they want a calming effect, partly because glycine has its own sleep interest. Taurate's cardiovascular story, by contrast, mostly comes from animal studies, not human sleep trials. That does not make it useless. It just means the “best for sleep” label on a taurate tub is a marketing choice, not a research finding.
