Protein Coffee, Protein Bread, Protein Crisps: Do You Actually Need Them?

UK sales of protein products rose 9.6% over 26 weeks (NIQ, February 2026). This guide asks the question the packaging never does: do you need any of it?
1. Why is protein suddenly in everything?
Because it sells. Protein is the one nutrient shoppers still read as unambiguously good, so putting it on a label lifts the product. The trade press is blunt about this. Protein products grew 9.1% in a year, and ready-to-drink protein went from $6bn in 2023 to $7.6bn in 2025, according to a March 2026 active-nutrition review.
Coffee is the newest format. Chains and supermarkets now sell protein lattes and protein creamers. None of that growth is evidence that British diets were short of protein in the first place.
2. How much protein do you actually need?
The UK baseline is 0.75g per kilo of bodyweight a day. For a 70kg adult that is roughly 53g. Most people clear it without trying. The British Nutrition Foundation puts average UK intake at about 85g a day for men and 67g for women.

There is a real debate above that line. The 0.75g figure is a minimum, not an optimum. Writing in The Conversation in March 2025, dietitian Aisling Pigott of Cardiff Metropolitan University argued most of us need a little more than the guidelines suggest, but far less than influencers promote.
Her point is the useful one. Even the higher research range of 1.2g to 1.6g per kilo sits close to what many Western adults already eat. A 70kg adult at the top of that range needs about 112g. That is a big number on paper, and an ordinary day of meals in practice.
3. Who genuinely needs more protein?
Some people do sit below what they need. Protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass, which matters more with age. Three groups are worth naming.
- Older adults. Appetite falls and muscle is harder to hold, so intake often drops below need. Our guide on protein after 40 covers the numbers.
- People training hard. Resistance training raises the useful intake, though usually to a level food already reaches.
- People eating very little. Illness, dieting or a poorly planned plant-based diet can all cut intake short.
If you are in none of those groups, a protein crisp is a crisp. It is not a deficiency being corrected.
4. Does a protein claim mean the food is healthy?
No, and this is the part the label works hardest to hide. A protein flash creates what dietitians call a halo. The one good number on the front stops you reading the rest.
Three things are worth checking on the back of the pack.
- Sugar. Many protein bars and drinks carry as much as a chocolate bar.
- Fibre. Most UK adults fall short here, and added-protein products rarely help.
- The protein number itself. A protein coffee may add only a few grams over a normal flat white.
Ordinary food is usually cheaper per gram. Eggs, milk, yoghurt, beans, fish and chicken were doing this job before it had a marketing budget.
5. What does all this extra protein do to your blood test?
It moves two kidney markers, and this catches people out. Your body turns protein into urea, so a high intake raises your blood urea. It can also nudge creatinine up, which in turn can pull your calculated eGFR down a little.
Those three sit together on a kidney panel. Seeing them shift after a few high-protein months reads like damage. In a healthy person it usually is not. A 2018 systematic review in The Journal of Nutrition found high-protein intakes do not adversely influence kidney function in healthy adults.

A steadily falling eGFR over months is a different signal. So is a fast creatinine rise: the NICE acute kidney injury guideline (NG148) treats a jump of 26 µmol/L in 48 hours as a warning sign. Do not write either off as the protein.
6. Which blood test to take
If you have pushed protein hard, the markers worth seeing are urea, creatinine and eGFR for the kidney side, plus total protein and albumin. Albumin is the main protein carried in your blood, and it reads more as a liver and nutrition marker than a scoreboard for your diet.
