Taurine and Ageing: What Your Bloods Actually Show

The launch was Singh et al., Science, June 2023. The correction was Fernandez et al., Science, June 2025, from the US National Institute on Aging.
Both papers are worth knowing about, because the gap between them is where most of the marketing sits. The anti-ageing claim is now genuinely contested. The metabolic effect underneath it is smaller, better evidenced, and something you can actually watch in your own blood. This guide covers all three.
1. What is taurine, and why is it everywhere?
Taurine is a small sulphur-containing compound your body makes and also absorbs from food. Meat, fish and shellfish are the main dietary sources. It helps with bile salts, calcium handling inside cells, and the stability of cell membranes.
Most people first met it on the side of an energy drink. That is where the name comes from for a lot of readers, and it is part of why the longevity claim travelled so fast. A familiar ingredient with a new and dramatic story is very shareable.
Supplement doses sit far above what a normal diet delivers. Trials have used 0.5 g to 6 g a day. A typical UK longevity stack lands somewhere between 1 g and 3 g.
2. What did the 2023 study actually find?
It found something real, in animals. Giving taurine to middle-aged mice raised their average lifespan by 10 to 12%. The authors also reported better markers of health in worms and in monkeys.
The paper's bigger claim was the one that made headlines. Circulating taurine appeared to fall steeply with age across species, so topping it back up looked like correcting a deficiency. That framing is what turned a mouse result into a shelf full of capsules.
Note what the study did not do. It ran no lifespan trial in people. The authors themselves said human trials were warranted, which is researcher language for we do not know yet.
3. Why did 2025 undo the headline?
Because the deficiency part did not hold up. Researchers at the US National Institute on Aging went back to long-running studies that had followed the same people for decades, including the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging.
Their finding was the opposite of the 2023 picture. Blood taurine stayed level or crept upwards with age in humans, monkeys and mice. It did not fall.
They also found that taurine varies far more between two people of the same age than it does across one person's life. That is the technical reason it fails as an ageing biomarker. Your reading tells you about you, not about your age.
4. What does taurine measurably move?
This is the part the longevity argument keeps drowning out, and it is the better evidenced half. A 2024 review in Nature's Nutrition & Diabetes pooled 25 randomised trials in 1,024 people, at doses of 0.5 g to 6 g a day.
- Triglycerides fell by about 18 mg/dL, which is roughly 0.2 mmol/L in UK units.
- Fasting blood glucose fell by about 5.9 mg/dL, or roughly 0.3 mmol/L.
- Blood pressure fell modestly, by about 4 mmHg systolic and 1.5 mmHg diastolic.
- Side effects were mild and no more common than in the control groups.
Read those numbers honestly. They are small averages, most trials ran two months or less, and the participants varied a lot. But triglycerides are the marker that moved most reliably, and they matter on their own terms.

The BHF puts a healthy fasting triglyceride level below 1.7 mmol/L. So a 0.2 mmol/L average shift is not nothing, particularly if you start high. Our triglycerides guide covers how the number is read, and the cholesterol blood test guide puts it next to LDL and HDL.
5. Can you test your taurine level in the UK?
Not usefully, and we would rather say so than sell you one. Plasma taurine can be measured as part of a specialist amino acid profile. It is not a routine wellness test, and Helvy does not offer it.
The 2025 study is the reason it would not help you anyway. If two healthy people of the same age can differ more than one person does across forty years, a single reading has no clear meaning. You would get a number with nothing to compare it to.
The same problem shows up with NMN and NAD+. A supplement whose effect you cannot see is a bet, not a decision.
6. How would you tell if it is working?
Measure the things taurine plausibly moves, before and after. That turns a shelf ornament into an experiment with an answer.
- Triglycerides. The marker with the strongest trial signal. Test fasting both times so the two readings compare.
- HbA1c. The trials measured fasting glucose, which swings with your last meal. HbA1c averages roughly three months, so it is the steadier re-test.
- Your full lipid picture. LDL, HDL and non-HDL cholesterol, read together rather than one at a time.
- hs-CRP, ApoB and Lp(a) for context. The taurine trials did not measure these. They tell you where your baseline risk sits, which is worth knowing regardless.
Timing matters. Test before you start, then again at about 12 weeks. That is long enough for HbA1c to reflect the change and sits at the upper end of the trial durations.

None of this argues against trying taurine. It argues against trying it blind. If your triglycerides do not move, you have learned something for the price of one test.
