The honest answer depends heavily on your age, and almost no lab report tells you that. This guide covers what albumin is, how much it really shifts across the decades, and when a low-normal result is worth a second look.
1. What is a normal albumin level in the UK?
Most UK labs print 35 to 50 g/L for adults. Albumin is a protein made by your liver. It is the most abundant protein in your blood, and it does two main jobs. It carries things around, and it holds fluid inside your blood vessels.

That is why albumin turns up on so many panels. It is over half your blood protein, so it moves whenever something bigger is going on. The same trust notes it is measured as part of liver and bone profiles. It is rarely the marker anyone ordered on purpose.
2. Does albumin fall with age?
Yes, gently, and the evidence for it is consistent. Yet UK labs report every adult against the same band. Your age changes nothing about how the result is printed.
A study of 17,930 adults in the Moli-sani cohort put it this way. Low albumin “was more frequent in individuals aged 65 years or older, reinforcing previous reports showing an inverse association between serum albumin and elderly population”. That study used 35 g/L or below as its cut-off.
So the drift is real, and it is small. It is a nudge over decades, not a step change at retirement. That matters both ways. It explains a low-normal result in an older adult, and it does not excuse one that keeps falling.
3. What the research shows by age
There is no official UK albumin chart by age. What exists is research on what healthy people actually measure. Read the figures below as a description of a population, not as a target for you.
- Younger and middle-aged adults typically sit in the low-to-mid 40s g/L.
- Average levels slide by roughly 1 g/L per decade after about 70.
- By the late eighties, averages in healthy adults land nearer 39 g/L.
- Results at or below 35 g/L become steadily more common with age.
Notice how narrow that whole span is. Across fifty years of adult life the average moves only a few points. So a big drop is never explained by age alone, at any age.
4. What does a low albumin point to?
Four broad directions, and a clinician narrows them using what sits beside it. Albumin is a signal that something is worth looking at. It is not an answer on its own.
- Inflammation. The liver makes less albumin while the body is fighting something, so CRP is usually checked with it.
- Losing it. Kidneys can leak protein into urine, and the gut can lose it too.
- Making less of it. Liver problems reduce output, which is why albumin sits on liver panels.
- Nutrition. Sustained low protein intake shows up here, though it is a late sign rather than an early one.
A mildly low albumin after a recent illness is common and usually settles. A result that stays low, or one paired with swollen ankles or frothy urine, needs a GP appointment rather than a search engine. The full liver function panel explains how these markers are read together.
5. What does a high albumin mean?
Usually that you were dehydrated when the blood was taken. There is less water in the sample, so everything in it reads more concentrated. Albumin is simply the marker that shows it clearly.
A tourniquet left on too long does the same thing. So can a blood test straight after hard exercise. If your albumin came back high and you had skipped fluids that morning, drink normally and retest.
6. Why albumin quietly changes your other results
This is the part most people never hear, and it is the real reason albumin earns its place on a panel. Albumin carries other things in your blood, so its level changes how those things are reported.
Calcium is the clearest example. Much of your calcium travels stuck to albumin, so labs report an adjusted calcium that corrects for your albumin level. Low albumin makes raw calcium look low when the active amount is fine.
The same logic runs through hormone testing. Albumin and SHBG both bind testosterone, which is why albumin is measured when free testosterone is calculated. Change the carrier and you change the free fraction, even when total testosterone has not moved.
7. Which blood test includes albumin?
Any standard NHS liver panel includes it. Privately, look for a panel that carries the markers around it, because albumin on its own tells you very little.
