Can You Take Too Much Vitamin D?

On 27 July 2026 The Diary Of A CEO published an episode titled “Vitamin D Expert: The Supplement World Is Giving The WRONG Advice!” Clips are everywhere, and so is the worry that follows. People open the cupboard, look at a 5,000 IU bottle, and wonder if they have overdone it. Here are the real numbers.
1. How much vitamin D is too much?
There are two numbers worth knowing. One is what most people need. The other is the line you should not cross.
The NHS puts the everyday amount at 10 micrograms a day, which is 400 IU. That matches the UK reference intake set by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition in 2016. The ceiling sits far above it.

So the UK safe ceiling is 4,000 IU a day. Two common bottle sizes sit either side of it. A 1,000 IU or 2,000 IU capsule is comfortably inside. A 5,000 IU capsule is above the ceiling, and a 10,000 IU one is well above it.
One high day is not the problem. The NHS wording is about what you take day after day, and the risk builds over months.
2. What does too much vitamin D actually do?
Vitamin D helps your gut absorb calcium. That is its job, and it is why an overdose shows up as a calcium problem rather than a vitamin problem.
The NHS puts it plainly. Taking too many vitamin D supplements over a long period can cause too much calcium to build up in the body, a state called hypercalcaemia. The NHS says this can weaken the bones and damage the kidneys and the heart.
Early signs are vague and easy to miss. Thirst, needing to wee often, nausea, constipation and tiredness are the usual ones. They overlap with plenty of harmless things, which is exactly why guessing is a poor tool here. If you feel unwell on a high dose, stop and speak to your GP or a qualified clinician.
Twitching and achy legs are a different story. Those are the side effects people report at ordinary doses, and the usual suspect there is magnesium rather than calcium.
3. What blood level counts as too high?
The test that answers this measures 25-hydroxyvitamin D, usually written as 25-OH vitamin D. It is the storage form, and it reflects what you have built up over recent months.
In the UK a reading under 25 nmol/L is the deficiency threshold used by SACN and the NHS. Most guidance treats 50 nmol/L and above as adequate. The top end is much further away than people assume. A 2021 review in the International Journal of Clinical Practice notes that many authorities set toxicity at above 150 ng/mL, which is above 375 nmol/L. That is roughly seven times the adequate mark.
Real-world data is reassuring too. A 2024 UK Biobank safety analysis of 445,493 people found raised calcium in 2.7 percent of vitamin D supplement users against 1.5 percent of non-users. Over a median 12.8 years it found no higher rate of kidney stones. Sensible doses are not the danger. Silent, unmeasured megadosing for months is the part worth watching.
4. Who is actually at risk?
Sunlight will not do it. Your skin stops making vitamin D once it has enough, so a long summer cannot push you into toxic range. Food will not do it either. Every reported case comes from supplements or injections.
The people who need more care are these. Anyone taking 5,000 IU or more a day for months without a blood test. Anyone stacking a multivitamin, a cod liver oil and a separate D3 capsule, which is easier than it sounds. Anyone also taking calcium supplements, since the two push the same number up together.
Reduced kidney function matters as well, because your kidneys handle the calcium load. A kidney function test reads urea, creatinine and eGFR, the markers that show how well you clear what you take in. If you have a kidney condition, sarcoidosis, or take prescribed vitamin D, talk to a qualified clinician before you change your dose.
5. Why testing beats guessing on dose
Here is the thing the dosing debate keeps missing. The right dose is not a number from a podcast. It is whatever moves your level from where it is to where it should be, and only a test tells you where you are starting.
Someone sitting at 20 nmol/L in February and someone sitting at 90 nmol/L in July are not the same person and should not take the same capsule.
