Mitochondrial health blood test: can you actually measure it?

No home finger-prick test measures mitochondrial function. In the UK, mitochondrial disease is worked up with DNA testing through specialist NHS services. What a home blood test can show is the ordinary, fixable reasons energy runs low: thyroid, liver, iron, and the vitamin B12, vitamin D and magnesium your cells run on.

On 7 September 2026 the Huberman Lab podcast published an episode with the biochemist Dr Jared Rutter on how mitochondria control metabolism. Within days, “how do I test my mitochondria” was a live question, and UK sellers already list home mitochondria kits.
So here is the plain answer, then the useful part. Mitochondria are the parts of your cells that turn food and oxygen into usable energy. You cannot read how well they are doing that from a drop of blood at home. You can read a lot of the things that make them short of what they need.
1. Can a blood test measure mitochondrial health?
Not as a wellness check, no. There is no single blood marker that reports how well your mitochondria are working.
When UK specialists investigate suspected mitochondrial disease, they do not look for one number. They read genes. The United Kingdom best practice guidelines for mitochondrial genetic testing put it this way: “As a consequence of the transition to a ‘genomics first’ diagnostic approach, mtDNA testing is typically undertaken early in the diagnostic pathway via analysis of blood and/or urine DNA.”
That is a genetic test, ordered by an NHS specialist service. It is not a finger-prick panel, and it is not something you buy online.
The supporting bloods sit in hospital labs too. Lactate and pyruvate, acylcarnitines, amino acids, creatine kinase and urinary organic acids all need careful collection and a specialist reading. Some variants do not show up in blood at all, so a muscle biopsy still has a place when DNA testing comes back clear.
If a home kit promises to score your mitochondria, ask what it actually measures. Usually it is a handful of ordinary nutrient and metabolic markers with a mitochondrial label on the report.
2. How likely is mitochondrial disease, really?
Rare. That matters, because the podcast version of mitochondrial health and the clinical version are different things.
A 2015 study in Annals of Neurology put the prevalence of adult mitochondrial disease at about 1 in 4,300, counting both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA causes.
Now hold that against an underactive thyroid. A 2011 review of primary hypothyroidism puts its prevalence in the general population at 3.8% to 4.6%. That is roughly 1 in 25 people, against 1 in 4,300. The common thing is common.
The NHS description of an underactive thyroid also explains why it gets missed: “Symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time”, and “some of the symptoms are common and can be caused by other conditions”.
Feeling flat, cold and foggy for two years fits that description exactly. It also fits low iron, low B12 and a long winter. None of those are a mitochondrial problem, and all of them show up in blood.
3. What can a home blood test actually show you?
The boring stuff. Which is the point, because the boring stuff is what tends to be wrong and what tends to be fixable.
- Thyroid. Your thyroid sets the pace your cells work at. TSH is the signal from your brain, free T4 is the stored hormone, and free T3 is the active form your tissues use. Our free T3 guide covers what the number means.
- Liver. ALT and ALP are enzymes that leak into blood when liver cells are under strain. A struggling liver is a real cause of low energy.
- Vitamin B12 and folate. Both are needed to build red blood cells, which carry the oxygen your mitochondria burn. The B12 guide has the UK ranges.
- Iron and ferritin. Ferritin is the protein that holds iron in reserve, so it shows how much iron you have banked. Low iron is one of the most common reasons for tiredness in the UK.
- Magnesium. Your cells need it to use ATP, the molecule that carries energy around a cell. See the magnesium guide for how the blood test is read.
- Vitamin D and CRP. Vitamin D runs low after a UK winter. CRP is an inflammation marker, and steady inflammation is tiring on its own.

A blood test measures biomarkers and offers wellness insight. It does not diagnose a condition, and none of this replaces your GP.
4. If you try a mitochondria supplement, how will you know?
Decide what you are watching before you start. Energy is a feeling, and feelings drift with the season, your sleep and what you paid.
- Get a baseline first. Thyroid, liver, B12, vitamin D and magnesium before you start, not after.
- Pick something you can count. A 1 to 10 score each morning beats a vague sense of improvement.
- Give it eight to twelve weeks. Nutrient levels move over months, not days.
- Change one thing at a time. Starting three supplements and a new bedtime together tells you nothing.
