QUICK ANSWER
Yes, for most people, but only by a modest amount. The British Dietetic Association says 2g a day of plant sterols or stanols can lower LDL cholesterol by 7.5 to 12%. To see if they worked for you, test LDL, non-HDL and ApoB before you start and again 8 to 12 weeks later.
Your last result said your cholesterol was a bit high. So now there is a Benecol shot in the fridge, or a tub of Flora ProActiv next to the bread. Are they doing anything?
The label says they lower cholesterol. Your own blood is the only way to know if they lowered yours. This guide shows what to expect and how to check. If you already hold a result, start with what your LDL number means.

As of October 2026. Sterol “stacks” for LDL are a busy topic on supplement forums this month. The core evidence has not changed: the 2g a day figure comes from the European Food Safety Authority review, and NICE last set its position in 2014.
1. What are plant sterols and stanols?
They are plant fats shaped a lot like cholesterol. Small amounts occur naturally in nuts, seeds, grains and vegetable oils.
Because they look so similar, they compete with cholesterol in your gut. Less cholesterol gets absorbed, and more leaves your body as waste. Your liver then pulls more LDL out of your blood to make up the gap.
LDL is the cholesterol that can build up in artery walls. It is the number sterols are meant to move. Your normal diet holds far too little to matter, which is why fortified foods exist. Benecol uses stanols. Flora ProActiv uses sterols. Both work the same way.
2. How much do plant sterols lower LDL?
About a tenth, if you take enough every day.
“Eating 2g (between 1.5g to 3g) of plant stanols and sterols can lower LDL cholesterol by 7.5 to 12 per cent.”
The BDA says to take them every day, with a meal, because they work by mixing with food. Going above 3g a day does not add much.
The effect is quick. The European Food Safety Authority found the full drop arrives within two to three weeks. It also stops when you stop.
Here is what that looks like. If your LDL is 4.0 mmol/L, a 10% fall takes it to 3.6. That is real, but it is smaller than many people expect. Our cholesterol blood test guide explains every line of the report.
3. Why doesn't NICE recommend them?
Sterols lower LDL on paper. No trial has yet shown they mean fewer heart attacks.
NICE tells clinicians not to advise sterols or stanols to prevent heart disease. That covers people already treated to prevent it, and people with kidney disease or diabetes. A 2017 study for England put it plainly: sterols have not been shown to reduce clinical end points, meaning heart attacks and strokes.
So do not use them in place of a statin you were prescribed. They are not advised for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or for children under five. If you take a statin and want to add them, ask your GP first.
4. How do you tell if sterols are working for you?
Test before you start, then again 8 to 12 weeks in.
People respond differently, so the average from trials only tells you what might happen. These are the markers worth tracking:
- LDL cholesterol is the number sterols target directly.
- Non-HDL cholesterol adds up every harmful type in one figure.
- ApoB counts the particles that carry cholesterol into artery walls.
Keep the rest of your routine steady between the two tests. If you also start psyllium for cholesterol at the same time, you will not know which one moved your numbers.
LDL also shifts a little from one test to the next on its own. A fall of a few percent can be noise. A clear, steady drop over two tests is a better sign the sterols are doing their job.
The Helvy Advanced Heart Health panel (£159) reports LDL, non-HDL and ApoB in one finger-prick kit, with Lp(a) and hs-CRP alongside. A blood test measures. It does not diagnose. Anything outside range is one to take to your GP.
Frequently asked questions
Does Benecol actually lower cholesterol?
Plant stanols, the active part of Benecol, can lower LDL by 7.5 to 12% at around 2g a day. Your own result may differ, so test before and after.
How long do plant sterols take to work?
The full effect arrives within two to three weeks. A retest at 8 to 12 weeks gives a steady reading.
Can I take plant sterols with a statin?
Ask your GP first. NICE does not advise sterols for people already being treated to prevent heart disease.
Which Helvy panel checks LDL and ApoB?
Advanced Heart Health (£159) reports LDL, HDL, triglycerides, non-HDL and ApoB, plus Lp(a), hs-CRP and HbA1c.
