Creatinine Levels by Age: Why Your Lab Range Never Changes

Creatinine is the waste your muscles make as they work. Your kidneys filter it into urine. This guide covers the UK ranges, why age is not in them, and where your age does count.
1. What is a normal creatinine level in the UK?
Ranges differ a little between labs, because they differ by assay. The adult ranges published by Oxford University Hospitals biochemistry are typical of what UK reports use.

Notice what splits those rows. Sex splits them, because men carry more muscle on average. Age does not split them at all.
2. Is there a creatinine chart by age in the UK?
No, and that is the honest answer. UK labs report one adult range from 18 upward. Children have their own ranges, which shift as they grow, but those stop at adulthood.
The same lab does note that age is one of the things affecting where a person sits within that range. Its wording is careful and worth quoting.

So age matters to your creatinine. It just does not get its own row on the report. Any age chart you find online is an average dressed up as a target. It tells you what is common at your age, not what is healthy for you.
3. So where does your age actually count?
Inside eGFR. That is the number printed beside your creatinine, and it is the one that reads your kidney function. eGFR stands for estimated glomerular filtration rate, meaning how fast your kidneys filter blood.
It is not measured. It is calculated, from your creatinine plus your age and sex, using an equation NICE guideline NG203 tells labs to use. Older age lowers the eGFR that a given creatinine produces.
That is why the two people at 99 umol/L got different letters. Same creatinine, different ages, different eGFR. The UK Kidney Association puts it plainly: eGFR is a more reliable measure of kidney function in stable patients than creatinine alone.
4. Why muscle moves creatinine more than age does
Creatinine comes from muscle. More muscle means more of it in your blood, with kidneys working perfectly. This is the single biggest reason a healthy person gets an odd-looking result.
NICE is direct about the size of the effect, and about which way it bends the estimate:
- More muscle raises creatinine, which makes eGFR underestimate your true kidney function.
- Less muscle lowers creatinine, which makes eGFR overestimate it.
- NICE names bodybuilders, people with an amputation and people with muscle wasting as the groups where this bites hardest.
The second one is the quiet risk. In a frail older person with little muscle, a normal creatinine can hide reduced kidney function. Protein supplements can nudge it too.
5. What else pushes a creatinine result up?
Several everyday things, and most of them are temporary. The first one surprises almost everybody.
- A meal with meat. NICE advises eating no meat in the 12 hours before an eGFR blood test.
- Hard exercise. A heavy session in the day or two before can lift the number.
- Dehydration. Less fluid concentrates the blood.
- Creatine supplements. They raise creatinine without harming the kidneys.
- Some medicines, including certain antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.

6. When does a raised creatinine matter?
The trend matters more than any single dot. One reading above the range is a prompt to repeat it, not a verdict. NICE asks for a confirming test within two weeks when an adult's eGFR first comes back under 60.
These patterns are worth a GP conversation at any age:
- A creatinine that climbs across repeated tests.
- An eGFR under 60 that stays there on a repeat.
- A big jump from your own previous result.
- Swollen ankles, foamy urine, or passing much less urine.
- High blood pressure or diabetes alongside a borderline number.
7. Which blood test reports your creatinine
You want creatinine reported with eGFR and urea. Creatinine alone leaves out the age arithmetic. Urea adds a second angle, because it responds to hydration and protein differently.

It sits inside a typical male range and just above a typical female one. On its own it settles nothing. Look at the eGFR printed beside it, and at your own previous results. A muscular person can run at 100 with entirely normal kidneys.
Should you fast before a creatinine blood test?
Fasting is not required. NICE does advise eating no meat in the 12 hours before a blood test for eGFR, because a meat-heavy meal can lift creatinine. Drink normally, since dehydration nudges the result up too.
Can building muscle raise your creatinine?
Yes. Creatinine is a by-product of muscle, so more muscle means more of it in your blood with healthy kidneys. NICE says increased muscle mass makes eGFR underestimate true kidney function. Heavy training in the days before a test can add to that.
What is the difference between creatinine and eGFR?
